Who We Are

Gandhi Samaj of Houston —
Our Community, Our Identity

Gandhi Samaj of Houston (GSOH) is a registered non-profit organization in the State of Texas, established in 2021 to unite members of the Modh Gandhi community living in Houston and surrounding areas.

The Modh Gandhi community traces its roots to the historic town of Modhera in the Mehsana district of Gujarat, India. Traditionally known as "Modh Vanik," the community shares deep cultural and spiritual devotion to Modheshwari (Matangi) Devi.

Over generations, our ancestors migrated across South Gujarat and later to different parts of the world in pursuit of growth and opportunity. Today, GSOH represents this continuing journey — bringing families together to preserve cultural heritage, strengthen unity, and support future generations right here in Houston, Texas.

The Modh Gandhi Heritage

Our Roots, Our Identity

Our Origins

The Modh Gandhi community traces its roots to the historic town of Modhera in Gujarat, India. We are part of the broader Modh community, whose heritage is closely connected to the Modh Vanik tradition and the ancient Dharmaranya region. For centuries, the Modh people have been recognized for their entrepreneurial spirit, commitment to community service, and strong cultural values.

A Legacy of Resilience

Historical traditions describe how the people of Modhera faced periods of political upheaval, invasions, and temple destruction that led many families to migrate throughout Gujarat and neighboring regions. As communities resettled, they adapted to new opportunities and occupations while preserving their shared cultural identity.

Over time, these migrations contributed to the development of several Modh sub-groups, including Modh Vaniks, Modh Gandhis, and Modh Ghanchis, each maintaining strong connections to their ancestral roots.

The Meaning of "Ghanchi"

Many Modh Gandhi families in South Gujarat became involved in the oil-processing and grocery trades. The name "Ghanchi" is traditionally associated with the operation of a ghani — a wooden oil-pressing machine used to produce cooking oils. This occupation became an important part of the community's economic and social history.

The entrepreneurial mindset that characterized our ancestors continues to define our community today. Over the past two centuries, members of the Modh Gandhi community have established homes and businesses across India and around the world.

Faith and Cultural Identity

The Modh Gandhi community reveres Modheshwari Devi (also known as Matangi Maa) as its Kuldevi, or clan goddess. Her worship is deeply connected to Modhera, the ancestral homeland of the Modh people.

For generations, devotion to Modheshwari Devi has served as a unifying spiritual and cultural bond among Modh families, helping preserve traditions, values, and a shared sense of identity.

Community Values

The Modh Gandhi tradition is founded upon:

  • Entrepreneurship and innovation
  • Community service and charitable giving
  • Family values and mutual support
  • Cultural preservation and education
  • Respect for faith, heritage, and tradition

These principles have guided generations of Modh Gandhi families and continue to inspire community members around the world.
